6 miles deep in the high Chisos wilderness lies the South Rim, a majestic and dramatic drop-off from the Chisos mountains to the desert 2,000 feet below. This is one of my favorite mini backcountry trips. Just load up the gear (and the water), head out, and hopefully capture the Milky Way and a beautiful sunrise. The image accomplishes the latter of my two goals. On this morning, we got lucky. The sun peeked out right below the clouds for a few minutes before disappearing for good. This created the majestic rays spilling over the desert seen in the image.
