This photo was taken in a bushplane over the Bagley Icefield in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in southeastern Alaska. Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the US national park system (4 times larger than Switzerland) and is home to the second largest non-polar icefield in the world (Bagley Icefield). I have never seen so much ice in my entire life. Glaciers were everywhere and the icefield itself ranged from 3,000 to 5,000 feet deep. The mountains that surround the icefield are some of the tallest and most dramatic in the world. Mount Logan, the highest peak in Canada is visible from the icefield as is Mount St. Elias. Mount St. Elias is one of the most impressive mountains I have ever seen. It rises from the Gulf of Alaska to an elevation of over 18,000 feet in less than 10 horizontal miles. Needless to say, the icefield and the surrounding peaks were incredible to see from the air.
