Standing in a freezing cold river in front of this scene was one of the greatest experiences I have had so far in life. My friend and I arrived in El Chalten, Argentina at the base of Mount Fitz Roy in the morning and decided to hike up into the national park to scout out some compositions. The weather forecast for the afternoon looked grim - as we drove into El Chalten - we could not see Fitz Roy towering over the town. However, seeing as how we were on the opposite side of the world, we decided to try to get lucky. After about a 4 mile hike with ~1,000 feet of elevation gain, we found this beautiful spot. When we arrived, the entire Fitz Roy massif was still shrouded in cloud. We would get small, isolated peeks at the spires but never a clear look. About 6 hours later, the wind picked up and began to blow the low-hanging clouds off of the peaks. I quickly stood up, prepared my gear, and waded into the river. I experimented with several different compositions, settled on this one and continued to wait. After about 45 minutes in the water, I finally got this incredible light and clouds on the mountains. To this day, this is my favorite image I have ever taken. It was a costly one too! We decided to come back to the same spot the next morning for an incredible sunrise. When we arrived, the mountain was already glowing pink with alpenglow. I set my tripod in the same spot in the river but after I set up, I realized that I had long pants on, which were being drenched by the river. Since we had about 16 miles of hiking to cover that day, I quickly hopped out of the river to change into shorts. As I turned, I heard a loud SPLOOSH in the river - it was my camera and tripod falling over. While traumatic in the moment, I think if I had to do it again, I would trade that camera for this photo every time! (Although I hope to avoid that mistake again)
